TGG is one of a kind show and can easily be called one of the best shows ever. The show was in vogue in the 80s and is still etched in the memory of the viewers. Its can be counted among the classics of American television and was a favorite of the viewers for seven consecutive years. This show's success was sealed by the vivacity of the performance of its lead cast; portraying the characters of four women staying together is a plush Miami house, namely Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia. TGG remained among the top ten shows for almost all its seasons and won a lot of awards too.
The serial basically focused in the lives for these retired women who put up together and live their life with zest and intensity. They hardly think or feel their age and this trait of theirs, lent the show some of its most amusing moments. It also focused on the problems of old age under a fresh new light. Though these women are well into their retirement age they want to live life like they are eighteen, it showed that- what is treated as the dusk of life can actually be a bright morning if we look at it that way.
In the show, TGG suffer from age related diseases like Alzheimer?s, heart problems etc. It gave a strong message of taking apt care of ones health and no amount of insurance or money is able to get good health for a person. Also, it shed light on the functioning of the retirement homes. In the show Dorothy's mother Sophia (also among the four Golden Girls dvd) was staying in a retirement home before she moves in with the other Golden Girls dvd and she often tells about her agonizing and overwhelming life over there. It showed retirement homes in a different light and how sending your parents there cannot always be the most viable option.
One of the other things it aimed attention at was the importance of money after retirement. In many episodes the girls have difficulty managing themselves with the pension and have to look at other worthwhile options of money to augment their funds.
In other words, this serial did give you a lot to feel jolly and cheerful about, but also conveyed a message that was important.
